EARTHDOG

This event to be held at the Northern Illinois Brace Club

MASTER EARTHDOG JUDGE

Richard Reynolds

Richard Reynolds began his involvement with dogs in 1962 as a veterinary assistant. Since then he has bred Beagles, English Foxhounds, Jack Russell Terriers, Norfolk Terriers, Fox Terriers and Wire Haired Dachshunds. He was an AKC licensed professional handler and is currently approved by AKC as a conformation judge of all the hound breeds, some terriers, Spanish Water Dogs and Best in Show and has had assignments nationally and internationally. He is also approved to judge all classes of AKC Earthdog tests. Outside of AKC Richard has judged at major hound shows on the east coast and is an approved judge for the American Working Terrier Association.

Reynolds’ focus as a judge has always been on preserving breed type through concentration on performance ability. He was the founding Master of Foxhounds of the only hunting pack of English Foxhounds recognized by both AKC and MFHA. Hounds from his pack have won a group at Westminster, many Bests in Show , many Large Pack classes at hound shows and the occasional Grand Championship. Most important, each hound and the Jack Russell Terriers that accompanied the pack, hunted a regular 3 day a week schedule.

Most recently Richard has pursued natural earthwork and above ground hunting with Dachshunds and terriers. Dubbed “The Ratcatcher of New York City” by the BBC, Reynolds’ pack of vermin-catching terriers has attained worldwide recognition in the media.

While judging comes first, he can often be found in the alleys of New York City hunting wild rats with terriers of all breeds and sizes or controlling vermin on the farms of New Jersey.

SENIOR EARTHDOG JUDGE

Ron Sebastiani

I got my first Border Terrier in 1993, CH Lothlorien Tye-A-Beau, CG, ME from JoAnn Frier-Murza and the rest was history. With the encouragement from JoAnn, I began my earthdog journey. Having tested Tye in AWTA trials, and being introduced to field work in a hunting environment with terrier, dachshunds and lurchers, this gave me valuable experience in earthdog. As a member of the New Jersey Beanfield Earthdog Club, earthdog tests became commonplace allowing for knowledge and expertise in judging earthdog. The beginning of AKC Earthdog was the impetus for my judging career. In 1994 I became a registered American Kennel Club Earthdog Judge, and one of the first master earthdog judges. I have judged Earthdog at many specialties, and this will be my fourth assignment at the Border Terrier National Specialty.

Although I still use my kennel name “Ruron”, we no longer breed but remain involved with Border Terrier education. With my Ruth, we have relocated to Myrtle Beach, SC, with 2 terriers, our beloved Border, Eli, and a rescue Rat Terrier, Bonnie.

I look forward to the Earthdog Specialty in Roscoe, IL and seeing many awesome Border Terriers and my great old friends.

JUNIOR EARTHDOG JUDGE

Gail Warnick

I met my first border terrier in the early 90's at the Montpelier Border Terrier Rally in Virginia. I knew right away that this was the breed for me. A small natural dog that could do it all. After attending a seminar at the BTCA specialty, I entered my little brown dog, Maris and was hooked. I've handled several dogs to their master titles and one to an endurance title. I've been actively involved with the Rivanna River Earthdog club and an earthdog judge for many years. I am also active in conformation, agility, coursing and scent work. It is an honor and privilege to be ask to judge at our national specialty. I look forward to this assignment and watch your dogs do what they were bred to do.

INTRO TO QUARRY JUDGE

Marg Pough

I have participated in Earthdog in all forms since the beginning of the sport with AWTA trials & natural hunts. We hosted a number of AWTA trials when we lived in Trumansburg, NY, and I chaired Terrier Days in Ithaca NY. I have been on natural hunts for woodchucks and have hunted with pack hounds. Two of my dogs have earned AWTA Working Certificates, and others I bred have natural hunted on a regular basis. Over the years the majority of my dogs have earned AWTA and now AKC Earthdog titles.
I chair the Finger Lakes KC Earthdogs tests held each July in Newark Valley NY.  I judge all levels of Earthdog. I love working with young dogs, see them turn on to the game, and then progress through the upper levels.
Den trials allow us to expose our dogs to a situation where their working instinct can be encouraged to express itself.
